​Omsk Fortress

Omsk Fortress is not just a historical landmark, but also a monument of military engineering art of Russia. Its construction was initiated by Peter the Great to protect the eastern borders of the Russian state and strengthen its position in Siberia.

Initially, the Omsk fortress was a wooden fortification, which was later replaced with a stone one. It occupied a strategically important position on the banks of the Irtysh and served not only as a military outpost, but also as an administrative center. The fortress housed a garrison, warehouses, barracks, and various administrative buildings.

The architectural appearance of the landmark has retained the features of typical military engineering structures of that time. High walls, bastions and towers provided reliable protection from attacks. The Omsk fortress was built in the shape of an irregular rectangle and was surrounded by an earthen rampart and a moat.

Only a few historical buildings of the Omsk Fortress have survived to this day, which have become cultural attractions. These are the Tobolsk Gate, the commandant's house, the guardhouse. It is impossible to fully restore the fortress now, since other buildings are already standing on this site. A museum complex is currently operating on the territory of the fortress.
